A look at why hosting DJ Kygo is a superb selection from SCOPE

·

Music is one category this campus doesn’t lack diversity in, and catering to the musical tastes of the 12,000 some-odd students is not an easy task. Nonetheless, the Student Committee on Popular Entertainment’s (SCOPE) decision to choose Kygo as the performer for its fall concert at the Whittemore Center on Oct. 24 was the right move.

From the Right: Exploring the GOP field

·

About four months and two debates into their campaigns, the large and impressive GOP field is finally starting to sort itself out.  We have already seen some rise quickly and others lose sight of their eventual path to the nomination and drop out. The political outsiders, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump, have all been shown tremendous support thus far. Meanwhile Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have been waiting patiently for their opportunity to snatch the nomination.

A word on the Language Guide

·

This past July, a Campus Reform web post that highlighted a “Bias-Free Language Guide” on UNH’s website quickly entered the national news cycle.

Supplemental Socializing

·

Students at UNH are primarily enrolled at this university to take classes and earn a degree. While there is no doubt that the majority of a student’s learning takes place during class time—in a lecture hall, lab or a field-site somewhere on or off campus—a significant amount of learning also takes place outside of the classroom in social settings.

From the Trustee: Analyzing SAFC’s Bylaw Change

·

This summer the undergraduate Student Senate took a step to enhance accountability for how your Student Activity Fee dollars are spent. The Student Activity Fee Committee (SAFC) is the committee within Student Senate that allocates the Student Activity Fee (SAF)-roughly 1.2 million dollars of student programming money. The committee is composed of senators, the OSIL Coordinator, the SAF Financial Consultant, and Business Managers (BMs), who represent the organizations which receive an annual budget (Student Activity Fee Organizations-SAFOs). All committee members’ work and efforts are certainly appreciated, and I personally value many of the wonderful organizations and their services funded by our SAF.

From the Right: Iran Deal Lacks Common Sense

·

Senate Democrats reached their magic number of votes to filibuster bringing up any vote on Obama’s Iran Deal. Although, it is not clear that all 41 democrats will stick together to filibuster the vote, it is probably likely. The vote could still be disapproved by congress, but the president certainly has enough votes to sustain a veto. Meanwhile, public opinion still overwhelmingly disapproves of the deal. President Obama and Secretary Kerry announced the deal in July, when they seemed absolutely desperate to get a deal done. Even though they know Iran has not seemed to change their tune on taking over the middle east and even further destabilizing the area. This is the same regime who proudly states that their goal is to end the way of life of western civilization and wipe Israel and the Jewish people off the planet. There are some Democrats who have showed their disapproval of the dangerous deal. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Bob Menendez(D-NJ) are two of four Senate Democrats to realize this is a bad deal for America and the world. The over $100 billion the Iranian government will receive in sanction relief will be used in part to fund terrorism in the region. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) said in his opposition to the deal on tuesday.

Biron: Radicals waging war in Africa

·

Although my average Saturday night in Bamako, Mali was a jumble of different clubs, casinos, and shawarma joints, a stop at La Terrasse was almost always squeezed in. You didn’t go to the crowded nightclub for its imitation American food, its indescribably awful mojitos or the older demographic salsa dancing through the bar. You went to the club because you knew the people there. Diplomats, security contractors, aid workers, journalists and wealthier Malians sat around the bar upstairs, danced with each other and got to know Bamako.

Editorial: Special Spirit at UNH, a righteous slam dunk

The University of New Hampshire Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) held an event entitled “Special Spirit at UNH” in the Lundholm Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The event featured athletes from Portsmouth High School and Pinkerton Academy Special Olympic basketball teams who played before a gym filled with fans, dance teams and the UNH marching band. Those who attended last night’s event said the atmosphere was electric and that the crowd was engaged throughout.

Editorial: A lapse in judgement

On Sunday, Rolling Stone magazine retracted a 9,000-word story on an alleged rape at a University of Virginia fraternity house. In place of the article is now a report on an investigation into the story carried out by the Columbia School of Journalism.
