Durham Town Hall: Student Senate shares Campus Carry stance and potential Cat’s Cache changes

DURHAM – Deeba Ajamian, a representative of the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Student Senate, shared the senate’s official stance on the Campus Carry Bill and hopes to improve UNH’s currency, Cat’s Cache, at the Durham Town Council meeting Monday, April 6.

The current Cat’s Cache provider’s contract will end in two years. Ajamian, the external affairs chairperson of the UNH Student Senate, said that the senate was working on a resolution to encourage the university to change what provider handles Cat’s Cache.

“Hopefully changing the [Cat’s Cache] provider will make it easier and more affordable for local businesses to have Cat’s Cache as an option,” said Ajamian.

Ajamian noted the results of the Campus Carry Bill opinion survey the senate conducted in February influenced them to pass Resolution R.47.40 on April 12, opposing the bill.

“A large majority of students are opposed to the campus carry bill,” said Ajamian.

Resolution R.47.40 states that the senate’s campus carry opinion survey received 2361 responses, 85.9% of which said students would be less likely to attend UNH if the Campus Carry Bill were to pass.

The resolution demands that the New Hampshire State Senate recognize UNH’s negative opinion of HB1793. It also urges lawmakers to mark it as “inexpedient to legislate,” which would kill the bill.

A hearing for the Campus Carry Bill is set for April 14 at 1:45 p.m. in the New Hampshire state house in Concord.
