Sorry, Duke Blue Devils fans. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but because your team could not surpass the pesky South Carolina Gamecocks, your 2017 March Madness brackets have officially been busted. I am not trying to call out my Sports Editor Brian Dunn, who picked the Blue Devils to win it all, but more or less am here to make you feel better as we gather to watch the Sweet 16 on Thursday and Friday.
The door has closed on the 2016-17 season for the UNH men’s hockey team. However, for seniors Tyler Kelleher and Matias Cleland, another door has just opened.
Entering Sunday’s road game against Fairfield University, the UNH women’s lacrosse team remained winless with an 0-4 record, while going 0-2 on the road.
In the process of wrapping up a long indoor track season this weekend, both UNH teams competed at their respective meets at Boston University. The men took to the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4As) and the women the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECACs) meets. Not everyone runs at these meets, with both meets having competitive qualifying standards. Both teams were coming off a tough conference championship meet last weekend when the men placed fifth and the women third.
The three Wildcat seniors shined their brightest in the final home meet of the season in Lundholm Gymnasium on Sunday.
After a record setting year in Durham, the ‘Cats were defeated by Maine 61-52 in the America East semifinals. UNH defeated Stony Brook 58-49 on March 4, in the quarterfinals to advance.
It was déjà vu. UNH and Merrimack for the second consecutive year tangled in a best-of-three series for the right to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East tournament.
Junior goalkeeper Kate Clancy made a game-saving stop in the final seconds of regulation to keep the score tied 10-10 with the College of Holy Cross Crusaders at the end of regulation.

On Wednesday night, the UNH men’s basketball team squared off in a rubber match against the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in the first round of the America East playoffs. The two teams had split their two regular season meetings and were looking to get the final word on who was the best. Once the final buzzer sounded, it was the Wildcats that came out victorious over the Retrievers 74-65 to advance to the America East semifinals against the No. 1 seed, University of Vermont.
It’s hard to find a weak spot on the UNH gymnastics team.
In their last game of the regular season, the Wildcats were able to battle for a road win against a good conference opponent. The ‘Cats were able to hold off the University of Maryland-Baltimore County’s (UMBC) fourth quarter comeback to win 65-61.
