Student Senate Update: Four Student Senate executive officers confirmed for next semester, nine resolutions passed.

The latest Student Senate meeting, this past Sunday night, opened up with an appearance from David May, the associate vice president of business affairs at UNH, who spoke in regard to updates on the multiple initiatives that his office has worked with the senate on. According to Student Senate Speaker Alexander Fries, May used this occasion to offer thanks to the students who have collaborated with him, many of whom are set to graduate next month.

Relay for Life raises $92,000 during annual event

Participants of UNH’s 14th annual Relay for Life laced up their shoes for the 18 hour fundraiser designed to raise money for cancer research and treatment  in support of all those who have been impacted cancer.

counseling conundrum: staff resignations revealed

Nine members of the UNH Counseling Center have resigned throughout the current academic year after the retirement of Former Director Dr. David Cross in June 2016. According to two previous counselors, their resignations were influenced by a “toxic” work environment that was allegedly present in the Counseling Center during this transitional period.

Glow it up: Galantis ignites the crowd in spring concert

Right before performing at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Swedish duo Galantis made a stop over at the Whittemore Center for UNH’s Spring 2017 concert on Thursday. Opening for them was another duo named Vicetone, two friends from the Netherlands.

Education Activist Coach Carter provides advice

“Get up early and stay up late — work when it hurts,” Coach Ken Carter, an education activist, business owner and former high school basketball coach, told UNH students Wednesday evening during his lecture, “Average is Just Not Good Enough”  in the Granite State Room of the Memorial Union Building (MUB).

University of New Hampshire students will face parking rule changes next semester after the final Transportation Policy Committee meeting of the year decided unanimously to pass enhanced restrictions.

HoCo gets fishy with Italian seafood crossover

Rather than having two separately catered dinners this semester, one with an Italian theme and the other one consisting mainly of seafood, Holloway Commons (HoCo) instead hosted the Italian Costal Cuisine dinner on Wednesday, April 19, that essentially combined the two dinners into one. By the end of the night, approximately 3,200 individuals attended the specialty dinner, which is a notable uptick from the dining hall’s weeknight average of 2,500 people.

Kappa Delta gets confident outside Dimond

This week, members of Kappa Delta will be handing out balloons, coffee and compliments to UNH students as part of a nationwide event that takes place at universities with Kappa Delta chapters, according to Kappa Delta Vice President of Public Relations Erica Santaniello.

Best Buddies hosts discussion on progress and inclusion

The New Hampshire Best Buddy program opened in January 2014. Since then, 26 schools have established programs with 1,000 active buddies now participating, according to Best Buddy program director, Laura Edmonson. She added that the program has also spread to Vermont and Maine.

SHARPP to host annual Anti-Violence walk and rally

According to the director of SHARPP Amy Culp, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center estimates that one in five women and one in 16 men will be sexually assaulted while they are in college. Culp sees sexual violence as a serious health issue.

How climate change may affect your cup of coffee

UNH associate professor of resource and environmental economics, Shady Atallah, gave a presentation titled, “Climate Change in Your Cup: The Bio-Economics of Shade-Grown Coffee,” in the Memorial Union Building Theater II. He spoke about something he has done extensive research on—the economics of coffee beans, and how climate change is affecting how they are grown and sold.

UNH kicks off Get Yourself Tested Month

UNH Health Services is partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the health institute’s effort to promote the entire month of April as “Get Yourself Tested Month” (GYTM) across college campuses nation-wide.

Student Senate revises its constitution and bylaws

UNH Student Senate created a temporary committee, the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Revision of Governance Documents (Ad-Hoc Committee), to revise its constitution and bylaws. Senate approved the establishment of the committee at the end of January, and elected Nicholas LaCourse, the advertisement manager, and Douglas Marino, the community development council chairperson, as co-chairs.

Letter campaign pushes for increased university system funding

In an effort to encourage the New Hampshire Legislature to allocate more funding in the upcoming state budget to the university system, members of the UNH student body and university administration met in the Memorial Union Building’s (MUB) Granite State Room on Wednesday to take part in a letter writing campaign titled, “Campus to Concord.” By the end of the two-hour event, approximately 60 letters were written and are likely to be sent to the state capital within the next days, organizers of the event said.
