UNH Law won't change "Franklin Pierce" title

University of New Hampshire (UNH) President James W. Dean decided not to change the name of the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law after a task force of students, faculty, staff, and alumni recommended against doing so. The school considered eliminating Franklin Pierce’s, the fourteenth and only U.S. President from N.H., name because of his connections with slavery.

In December 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved two vaccines recommended to prevent coronavirus (COVID-19), the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and Moderna’s vaccine. Entering the new year with the pandemic still prevalent in everyday life, students and community members alike can inform themselves on both vaccines here.

UNH builds simulation center to address healthcare worker shortages

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) recently announced the development of the College of Health and Human Services’ Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC). The simulation center will be located off Waterworks Road next to Gregg Hall. Construction has already begun and is set to be completed by August 2021.

Durham winter break testing updates

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is now nearly one month into its winter break coronavirus (COVID-19) testing program and currently stands at a 1.24% positivity rate of the students, faculty, staff and contractors participating in the program. This rate is the highest it has been since the start of UNH’s testing program, however there are less people being tested during this period.

Business spotlight: Koastal Kooks

Inspired by the word “Kook” which is a slang to describe an amateur surfer, Koastal Kooks is an apparel and clothing company founded by University of New Hampshire (UNH) students John Bogush, Patrick Cotter, Adil Hamdi, Carter Havey and Christian Lamers. Though Koastal Kooks was only an idea for these five co-founders when they were in high school, it came to fruition this past summer. Since then, Koastal Kooks has become a popular brand in the UNH community. The brand sells basic clothing pieces ranging from t-shirts, crewnecks, hoodies, sweatpants, to accessories like hats and beanies.

Manchester still seeking solution for rising homeless population

Last week the New Hampshire State Police dismantled the growing homeless encampment at 300 Chestnut Street in Manchester. The homeless encampment, which at the time of dismantling housed over 80 tents, had been a growing topic over previous weeks that the Attorney General’s office announced their intent to dismantle the encampment. The encampment area, which sits on state-owned land behind the Manchester courthouse, was deemed a “no camping” area on Nov. 6.

How UNH students feel about the transition to remote learning

On Monday Nov. 23, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) transitioned to online learning for the remainder of the fall 2020 semester. This scheduled transition was to stop of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) since faculty, staff, and students were going home and traveling for the holiday break.

UNH Institute on Disability awarded $2.5 million grant

In 2018, 13.9% of New Hampshire residents 25 and older with a disability had a four-year college degree, in comparison to 24.3% of residents without a disability having a four-year college degree according to the 2019 Disability Statistics Compendium. The Granite State Transition Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID) project hopes to narrow that gap in the next 5 years.
