The Grind brews up a new favorite coffee destination for downtown Durham

Tucked away on Jenkins Court, The Grind has quickly become a go-to spot for students looking for quality coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.

Downtown Durham is home to a new cozy-coffee spot: The Grind. Since Sept. 14, the cafe has quickly become a destination for students to enjoy specialty lattes and freshly made sandwiches. Originally from Derry, New Hampshire, The Grind’s second location is tucked away on Jenkins Court, just off Main Street. The café is open every day, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. These hours are perfect for early morning coffee runs or late brunches.

Inside, soft lighting, clean modern décor, and a playlist of popular tunes create an inviting atmosphere. Free Wi-Fi, plenty of outlets, and a step-free entrance make the space welcoming and accessible to all. The energy of the cafe shifts throughout the week. Earlier in the week, the café is calmer with quick and attentive service, while later in the week it can get busier and louder with longer waits for drinks and food.

The menu is huge, with 16 signature lattes and over 25 flavor options.

Students looking for an afternoon boost can try the “Wildcat Rush” energy drinks, which are customizable with flavored cold foam. Breakfast options include a variety of “Egg Sammies” with playful names like the ‘Hot Chick,’ ‘Fancy Chick.’ For those skipping eggs, the Grind offers a ‘No Chicks Allowed’ sandwich, featuring apple-bacon sausage, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and jalapeño cream cheese..

Lunch offers a selection of “Toasties,” which are tasty alternatives to standard breakfast sandwiches. For the fall, The Grind has seasonal drinks like the Sweater Weather caramel apple chai and the Jack O’ Lantern pumpkin latte.

For students, prices are a bit on the higher side. A medium NH latte and the breakfast sandwich, Salty Chick, total to just under $20 with tip, but the portions are generous and the quality makes it feel worth it.

All in all, The Grind is a great spot for friendly service, delicious food, and quality drinks. While it might not be an everyday stop for students on a budget, it’s definitely worth the occasional treat. Overall, The Grind earns a solid 9/10 for price, quality, service, and atmosphere. A slightly pricey but welcoming spot that’s quickly become a downtown favorite.
