Hello, fellow Wildcats and Granite Staters! My name is Sydney, a UNH student who loves hiking, exploring, and finding little outdoor escapes as much as I can. One of my absolute favorite spots nearby is Mt. Major. It has become my go-to hike when introducing a friend to hiking because it is close, fun, and the views are seriously some of the best in the state.
Mt. Major is located in Alton, New Hampshire. With this mountain only being about an hour from Durham, you can roll out of bed, grab some friends, and be on the trail before lunch. I’ve gone more times than I can count because it is just that convenient, and the views never get old.
There are two different ways to access the summit: the Main Trail (classic and straightforward) or the Boulder Loop Trail (a slightly steeper option, but fun if you want to have a bit of a challenge). No matter which one you pick, you’ll be reaching the top in about 45 minutes to an hour. It is not a long hike by any means, but the summit makes you feel as if you are on top of the world! Think vast views of Lake Winnipesaukee with mountains stretching out in every direction. It really is one of those spots that makes you stop and go Wow. I recently took one of my dear friends to Mt. Major as her first real hike, and she couldn't believe how rewarding the views were!
And here is the best part: the hike doesn’t require a ton of planning. A good pair of hiking shoes, some water, and a snack or two are really all you need. I usually pack a granola bar or some trail mix, but honestly, just standing at the summit and taking in the view feels like a reward enough.
One of my favorite things about Mt. Major is how versatile it is. You can go for a quick morning hike, an afternoon escape, or even an early evening adventure to catch the sunset. On a clear day, the golden light hitting the lake and mountains is breathtaking. It’s also a great spot for photography, whether you’re snapping shots for social media or just capturing memories with friends.
Whether you’re new to hiking or a seasoned trail-goer, Mt. Major is the perfect escape from the everyday grind. Once you reach that summit and see the view stretching out below, you’ll understand why it’s one of my favorite spots in New Hampshire.
